Individual triumphs propel wrestlers against Cedarcrest
Between forfeits and old-fashioned pins, the South Whidbey wrestling team isn’t having a stellar year. Though the team hasn’t won any dual meets, individual performances may lead several Falcon grapplers to state.
At home against Cedarcrest Wednesday, South Whidbey’s Jordan Broyles (171-pound eight class), Trevor Romero (189) and David Monell (215) all pinned their opponents to win. Kevin Kinloch (285) won on points, 9-2.
However, forfeits — six points are lost per each weight South Whidbey doesn’t field — doomed the team. They lost 54-21.
“We won four bouts and lost five, which isn’t too bad but giving up six for each forfeit killed us,” said Falcon coach Jim Thompson.
Thursday at Archbishop Murphy, Evan Thompson (125), Romero and Monell pinned and Van Morgen (135) won by decision, 7-3. The Falcons lost 54-33.
