It was only the fourth or fifth time South Whidbey’s girls tennis team played on the courts.

It didn’t show, though, as the Falcons almost swept the Lakewood Cougars in a 6-1 victory.

Only the first doubles team lost, and South Whidbey head tennis coach Tom Kramer credited the loss to inexperience.

Tuesday’s match was the first time senior Andrea Berg and junior Jessica Cary played together in a district match. Kramer said he expects them to learn quickly and become one of the better teams in the league. The Lakewood doubles team that defeated Berg and Cary were one of the top teams last year, Kramer said.

He said he planned to work on his first doubles’ attack lobs to counter defensive lobs, which was a main part of Lakewood’s lone win.

South Whidbey’s next match was canceled and will be rescheduled. The Falcons were scheduled to play Monday, March 28 against Lakewood, but the Cougars will be on break.

Hayley Newman (South Whidbey) defeated Talli Caldwell (Lakewood) 6-2, 6-0 and Kalie Stayskal (SW) won against Destinee Desmond (LW) 6-0, 6-1.

Amelia Weeks (SW) beat Siham Lee (LW) 6-2, 6-2, and Lyna Nichols (SW) defeated Alisa Smith (LW) 6-1, 6-1.

Jordan Wessell/Allie Hernandez (LW) topped Berg/Cary (SW) 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Bayley Berg/Teagan Heggenes defeated Danika Welty/McKayla Schwiger (LW) 6-0, 6-0, and Claire Hofius/Laina Stonefelt (SW) bested Juliya Rachko/Alethea Cody (LW) 6-0, 6-0.
