The stay at the Little League 9/10 state softball tournament was a short one for Central Whidbey.
Central/South Whidbey Little League, the District 11 representative in the state tournament, was eliminated after two 10-run losses Saturday and Sunday.
Central Whidbey was a victim of a perfect game in a 15-0, four-inning loss to Woodinville in the opener Saturday, July 12, in Asotin.
“Pretty much a rough game,” coach Lark Gustafson said. “The other team played great.”
Sunday, the Whidbey team fell to Sammamish 12-2 in four innings. The 3 p.m. game was played in 100-plus heat, Johnson said.
Coral Caveness doubled to drive in Central Whidbey’s runs. Mollie Bailey added a single and Stella Johnson walked for other offensive highlights.
“Our girls played much better,” assistant coach Mimi Johnson said.
Regardless of the defeat, the bubbly players, in typical 9/10 spirit, jumped into the river, uniforms and all, to cool down and then headed for pizza.
“Overall, it was a great experience for the girls,” Johnson said.
