The NWLA Cultural Center’s Language of Food Series continues at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 with “The Heart of Cuba.”

This unique series explores cuisines and cultures from around the world, and the ways in which they maintain an unbroken relationship with the healthier traditions of the past.

“The Heart of Cuba” will begin with a traditional Cuban feast, including roast pork, yucca, plantains and congri. With both meat and vegetarian options available, guests will excite their senses with the spices and rich variety of Cuban cuisine.

NWLA also welcomes Elspeth Savani, founder of Orchestra Zarabanda, and percussionist Ricardo Guity, who will open the performances with sacred call-and-response songs from the Afro-Cuban Lucumí religion. This presentation will focus on the major deities (orishas) and their influence in Cuban popular culture, the essential components of an Orisha ceremony, and the Yoruban roots of this highly codified drumming, song and dance expression.

The pair will then be joined by Kevin Connor and David Trejofor of Los Supersones for a performance of Cuba’s rootsy, dance-friendly Son and Changui music.

The event will be held at the NWLA Cultural Center at 5023 Langley Road, Langley.
