To the editor:
I wanted to express my thanks for the generosity of this community, which never ceases to amaze me.
Our South Whidbey Relay for Life group recently had a couple of fundraising events, and in an economy such as we are experiencing and knowing how many times businesses are asked for donations I really hesitated in asking for items for our silent auction.
Instead of getting the anticipated “We can’t do it this year” response, I was treated to some wonderful items. From local restaurants to the galleries and shops at Greenbank Farm, where the auction was held (and netted more than $1,000), to the handmade glass jewelry from TinArt, to a night at Sunset Cottages, which will be added to the quilt- drawing prizes (this beautiful quilt made by Gail DuPont is currently on display at Wells Fargo Bank in Clinton). China City allows us to hold all our meetings there, and gave us the use of the front lawn for our garage sale, which netted nearly $3,000.
Nearly $10,000 in cash or in-kind support has been pledged by sponsors of the event, and we could not do it without them. They include Whidbey General Hospital, Whidbey General Foundation, Shorey Construction, George and Tonya Henny, Louis Muniz Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Schuster Foundation, PSE, Whidbey Telecom, Wells Fargo Bank, Randle Masonry, Greenbank Farm, Creative Ad Solutions, Wescott Floors, China City, Maple Ridge Assisted Living, South Whidbey Rotary, Porter Whidbey Insurance, South Whidbey High School, Whidbey Vision Clinic, Whidbey Island Bank and Sound Business Center.
Such generosity is overwhelming, and we appreciate those who support all these worthy causes either with time, gifts or other support. This is what makes this island a real community and why I love living here.
I hope to see many of you at the Relay on June 19-20, where you can experience even more of the outstanding support your extended family — this community — has to offer and how rewarding it can be to be a part of that.
