Eula Beatrice White Chadwell of Greenbank passed away Sept. 4, 2011.
She was born in Tioga, W.Va. on Sept. 16, 1908.
She was the middle and was the last surviving child of nine born to Clifford and Viola Rigsby White.
The family traveled by train to Cosmopolis, Wash. when Eula was a child. Her father was a saw sharpener in a mill. Her mother died suddenly when Eula was about 12.
She married Robert Chadwell in 1929. Their daughters are Joyce Barnett, Barbara Milewski and Kathryn Bennett.
Eula spent most of her married life in the Seattle area except for a few years in Omaha, Neb., where Barbara was born in 1934. Joyce was born in Seattle in 1930.
Nebraska in those years was subject to many severe dust storms which she disliked so much that after five or six years the family returned to Washington state, where Kathryn was born in 1945.
After Robert died in 1969 she learned to drive and went to work. She was a receptionist for a doctor and secretary to the Washington state chairman for the Goldwater campaign.
She learned to drive and passed her driving test after she was 60. She was then able to drive a Dodge Dart, which was the only family car.
She moved to Whidbey Island in 1995 to live with her daughter Kathryn and her family.
She was the mother of three, grandmother of 22, great-grandmother of 19 and great-great-grandmother of 12.
She had a great sense of humor which endeared her to all of her descendants.
Funeral services were held Sept. 16 at St. John Vianney Church in Kirkland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Island County Senior Services.
