Oran Hoiland

Oran (Swede) Hoiland, 86, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, passed away Jan. 5, 2008 in Monroe.

Oran was born on April 16, 1921, in Marshall, Minn. He married Thelma Helland in 1945. He resided in Clinton from 1945 to 1989 and later resided in Snohomish County and Arizona.

Oran retired from the Army in 1963. After retiring from the Army, he worked for the Washington State Ferries for many years as well as being a part-time carpenter and house painter.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Clinton, American Legion Post No. 141, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7482 and Elks Lodge No. 2362.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and had a special love for preparing the annual lutefisk dinner at the church.

Oran is survived by Thelma, his wife of 62 years; daughters, Shirley (Bill) Vanetta, of Snohomish, and Chrisdy (Murray) Johnson, of Mechanicsville, Va.; grandaughters, Ashleigh and Bayley Johnson; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date for family.
