Shirley Ann Cross, 76, of Clinton, died May 26, 2003, in Coupeville.

She was born Aug. 19, 1926. She lived most of her life in Spokane, where she worked many years the Spokane Public Schools in the art department, as a consultant and then as a director of art. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from Eastern Washington University and a master’s degree in art from Washington State College.

She retired early due to cancer, and went on to design and help build a cabin on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, which she enjoyed for a number of years. She moved to Whidbey Island in 1994 when she bought land and built a small cabin. While commuting for several years between cabins, she stayed busy throwing pots on her pottery wheel and selling her art at various fairs, including Choochokam.

When her health began to fail a couple of years ago, she moved to Whidbey Island full time. She enlarged her cabin into a comfortable house facing her garden, where she spent many hours creating landscapes with her flowers.

She is survived by a sister, Felicia Williams, of Clinton; two daughters, Carol Baker and Connie McCleery of the Seattle area; two sons, Ken Cross of Spokane and Gary Cross of State College, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her companion, Bill Tupper.

A family memorial service will be held Sunday morning.
