Dorothy Slattery

Dorothy Loren “Lorrine” Handley Slattery, 82, died Nov. 2, 2003, after a long and courageous struggle.

She was born April 22, 1921, in Longmont, Colo., the sixth child of Gretchen and Bulah Handley. She was the oldest daughter, and had six brothers and two sisters. In the early 1930s the family moved to El Camino, Calif.

She graduated from Red Bluff High School in 1939 and worked for her brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Rachel Handley, in their shoe store, Handley’s Shoes. It was there she met her future husband, Robert E. Slattery. They were married in 1948, and five years later had a daughter, Debbie. Dorothy worked at Handley’s Shoes and later Handley’s Dress Shop, where she was buyer and manager until the store closed in the late 1960s. She then worked for the Red Bluff School District as the high school bookkeeper until 1971, when she became manager of Osar’s dress shop.

The couple moved to Truckee, Calif., in the mid-1970s, where her husband was manager of the Truckee Public Utility District. Dorothy spent a lot of time volunteering and worked part-time in the Tahoe Donner Recreation facility.

In 1984 Dorothy and Bob moved to Whidbey Island to be closer to family, particularly her granddaughter Lisa. Dorothy also worked part-time at Payless Foods Video Place when it opened.

She loved sports of all kinds. She was an avid golfer and a member of Wilcox Oak Golf Club in Red Bluff, and Useless Bay Golf and Country Club. She loved to watch her granddaughter show horses and attended many of Lisa’s horse shows. One of her favorite things to do was to watch a sporting event on TV with her son in law, Mike. Dorothy was a kind and loving mother, grandmother and friend. Mimi will be greatly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a daughter, Bobbie Phyllis; brothers Audrey, Ronald, Leon, Max, Chester and John Handley; and a sister, Arlene Palmere.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Mike Stone, Freeland; a granddaughter, Lisa Michele Stone, Pullman; a sister, Shirley Carroll, Clovis, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Freeland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Careage of Whidbey, Home Health Care or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by Visser Funeral Home, Langley.
