Gilbert Surface

Gilbert Roosevelt Surface, 83, a longtime Clinton resident before moving to the Everett area, died Jan. 22, 2004, in Wenatchee.

He was born Jan. 7, 1921, in Madras, Ore. He married Edna Engstrom on June 26, 1942, in Everett. He was a farmer and logger on Whidbey Island and worked for many years for Sandvig Lumber Co. He also was a retired Teamster. After retirement he worked as a supervisor for the Grant County Weed District in Quincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers — Carl, Ray, Garry and Clyde — all of whom had lived on South Whidbey.

He is survived by Edna, his wife of 62 years; two daughters, Brie Ericksson of Wenatchee and Sharon Eriksson of Edmonds; a son, James G. Surface, and a daughter-in-law, Beverly, in Everett; four grandchildren, Kathleen Lilley of St. Paul, Minn., and David Lilley and his wife, Karen, and Marcus and Nicole Surface, all of Everett; a great-granddaughter, Victoria Lilley Ruckle, St. Paul, Minn.; two sisters, Belma Engstrom of Clinton and Ruth Nordstrom of Redmond, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

Family graveside services were conducted Tuesday at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Everett. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Crossroads Church, East Wenatchee. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Calvary Crossroads Church or the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation.
