Peggy Coulter Gilbert died peacefully Nov. 27, 2002, at Careage on Whidbey Island.

Born March 15, 1909, on Capitol Hill in Seattle, she lived in the Northwest among friends and family, enjoying grandchildren and her beloved Seattle. She was an athletic child, swimming across Lake Washington, climbing the ski slopes before lifts, ice-skating and golfing.

As a pianist she played, Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin and never missed the Saturday Metropolitan Opera broadcast, especially Puccini. She often commuted by boat to classes at the University of Washington from Port Madison, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in romance languages and serving twice as president of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She wrote and edited for her childhood friend Bill Speidel and helped in the development of the Seattle Underground.

According to her family, she infused her children and grandchildren with a lifelong love of reading and an insatiable curiosity about the world.

She is survived by a daughter, Page, and son-in-law Tom Baenen of Whidbey Island; a son, David, and daughter-in-law Lyn Gilbert of Sequim; and four grandchildren, Lisa Haines, Allyson Johnson, Gordon Gilbert and Cassie Gilbert.
