Emily Barbara Vogel Pope, 84, died Feb. 10, 2003, at Whidbey General Hospital.

She was born May 1, 1918, in Columbus, Ohio, to Joshua Holmes and Helen Hollister Vogel. As a young child she lived with her family in China and Japan. Her family became one of the original families on the east side of Lake Washington, first residing at Lewis Point and then settling in Beaux Arts Village in 1926.

She attended the University of Washington, studying dance, music and the fine arts. She was married to Edward H. “Herb” Pope Jr. Aug. 29, 1941, on Kodiak Island. He was called to active duty with the Army during World War II. She moved to Seattle to be with family and to work at Woodlawn flower shop. The couple settled in Beaux Arts after the war, where their two children were born.

In 1959 the Pope family moved to the Pine Lake area of Issaquah. Barbara was a member of two garden clubs, and participated in yearly charitable plant sales in Seattle. She was a member of the Pine Lake Community Club, and was an outspoken advocate of open space and greenbelt preservation. It was during this period of her life she instilled in her children a love of nature and animals, and supported them wholeheartedly through 4-H projects and school activities.

In 1983 the couple moved to Maple Valley and in 1988 to Ocean Shores. They became permanent residents of Coupeville in 1995.

Mrs. Pope called herself a “foodie,” studying the culinary culture of various countries, experimenting with recipes, and following cooking programs on television. She was a talented seamstress, house designer and gardener. At her home in Pine Lake, she raised 200 species of rhododendrons. Some of her other pastimes included RV’ing, beachcombing, clam digging, rockhounding and camping. She had a quick wit and always enjoyed a lively intellectual discussion.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb, and a brother, Timothy.

Mrs. Pope is survived by a daughter Ann “Kestrel” Pope and her partner, Katherine “Madrone” Moulton, of Coupeville; a son, Edward “Ted” Pope III and his wife, Marsha, of Richfield, Minn.; a brother, Peter Vogel, Coupeville; three sisters, Ruth Knoke of Coupeville and Thorp, Caroline Tyler of Walla Walla and Marianne Gordon of Elk Heights; and a grandson, Scott Kietzman and his wife, Sarah, and a great-granddaughter, Josie Kietzman, all of St. Louis Park, Minn.

A private gathering for family and friends will be held. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
