Albert O. Wahto

Army Lt. Col. Albert O. Wahto passed away Oct. 27, 2003.

He was born Oct. 13, 1918, in Douglas, Alaska. After graduating from Douglas High School he attended the University of Alaska, graduating in 1942 with a bachelor of science degree in mining and geology.

Immediately after graduation, he was inducted into the Army, receiving an officer’s commission at Fort Belvoir, Va., in 1942. He was assigned to the 854th Engineering Battalion and served in the South Pacific until November 1945. At that time he became great friends with Bud Bergman, and their friendship brought both families to Whidbey Island for fishing and relaxing.

On Nov. 16, 1945, he married his college sweetheart, and they raised a family of four in the Burien area before his retirement to Bush Point in 1984.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; children Carol (Sid) Hall, AnDrew (Roseann) Wahto, Barbara Carper; grandson Jason (Tess) Wittler; great-grandson Keyland; many nieces and nephews; and brothers Douglas and Gordon Wahto, both in Alaska.

Mr. Wahto was an active leader of the Lighthouse Shores Homeowners Association and contributed his engineering talents to the repairs and maintenance of the community property. His contributions to the community were valued by many.
