Wayman Bailey “Toad” Rettig passed away on March 24, 2008.

He was born to Nellie (Fetter) and Wayman Rettig in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 24, 1923.

Toad grew up in Oahu, Hawaii and Pacific Grove, Calif. Upon graduation in 1941, he joined the Navy, beginning a 31-year career that began with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and spanned three wars.

Toad proudly served on the battleship USS Tennessee during World War II.

Rising to the rank of CWO-4, he formed close friendships throughout his distinguished career, and enjoyed many USS Tennessee reunions after his retirement in 1972.

By then a widower, Toad met Donna Lewis in Fallbrook, Calif. “I was smitten,” he liked to say.

They were married on May 1, 1983 in Camp Pendleton’s historic Ranch House Chapel.

Toad enjoyed fishing, golfing, and hunting — especially duck hunting with his brother Corky (California). His and Donna’s travels included a memorable visit in Germany with another brother, Bailey (California).

A Shriner, he belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Fallbrook.

In 1988, the couple moved to Sequim where he is remembered for his work on the Irrigation Festival and the Ditchwalkers’ parade floats. They moved to Whidbey Island in 1998.

“Papa Toad” was a beloved grandfather to his step-grandchildren, Becca (Washington), Chris and Savannah (North Carolina) and Robyn and Erin (North Carolina). He earned the love and respect of his stepchildren, Scott Lewis (Tracy, N.C.), Steve Lewis (Tatiana, Wash.), and Spencer Lewis (Hilary,

N.C.).

Toad was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Donna of 25 years. She, along with the family and his many friends, miss his kind and gentle presence.
