Lawrence H. Evans

Lawrence H. “Larry” Evans, 74, of Freeland, died July 12, 2003, at Whidbey General Hospital.

He was born Feb. 2, 1929, in East Helena, Mont. He was a Marine Corps sergeant, a veteran of the Korean War and received several medals. He moved to Seattle in 1952 and was a Boeing employee for 34 years. One of the highlights of his career was working on the development of the Boeing 747. He retired from Boeing on Feb. 1, 1992, as a buyer for aerospace tool engineering. He and his family moved to Whidbey Island in 1989.

His hobbies included scuba diving with the Boeing Seahorses, perfecting his gourmet chef talents, reading and gardening. He was an active member of Whidbey Island Eagles Aerie 3418, Whidbey Island American Legion Post 141 and the Friday Lunch Bunch.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Evans, and a stepson, Larry Dunbar.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Donna Evans, of Freeland; a son, Mike Evans, of Enumclaw; stepchildren Mike Dunbar of Longview, Bob Dunbar of Everett and Tami Kamp of Monroe; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and “Grandpa Larry’s” inspirational “dear child,” Joshua Decker.

An outdoor memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 26 at the home of Donna Evans. It will be a Marine Corps salute and ceremony with an aerial display. A celebration of life and wake will immediately follow the service at the Whidbey Island Eagles lodge.
