It was about what they’d expected.

Last Thursday and Friday, two South Whidbey High School doubles teams and one singles player quickly worked their way through a North Cascades sub-district tennis meet to set themselves up for perhaps a trip to the state meet. There were no surprises, nor were there any upsets to speak of.

“That’s what I expected,” said Falcon Coach Tom Kramer, after his doubles teams and singles player Molly Fox nearly monopolized all the advancing placings at the meet.

On their home court for the two-day tournament, the Falcons had the edge even before they picked up their racquets. Unbeaten in North Cascades Conference play this year, they had little trouble beating down the opposition from Lakewood and Blaine. Senior doubles partners Jenny Saephan and Kylie Bozym, who won their division and set up a possible defense of their 2001 state championship, had their only challenge of the meet when they played teammates Paige Oliver and Jenny Newman. Saephan and Bozym won the Thursday match 6-2, 6-3, but did nothing to damage Oliver and Newman’s game, which was good enough to down Blaine’s Jenny Freeman and Laura Taylor twice — once in an opening-round, 6-0, 6-1 victory, the second in a final-round 6-1, 6-4 win.

In singles, the Falcons started the tournament with Fox and sophomore Amy Vogt at singles. Age and experience proved to be the difference for Fox, who weathered a second-round loss before going on to beat Lakewood’s Jamie McFarland for second place in the final round. Vogt, who also lost in the second round, wound up placing fourth after losing a 6-3, 6-4 match to her teammate.

On Friday, the Falcons travel to Federal Way to play in the Northwest District 2A meet. Also heading to the meet will be the Falcon boys, who will finish up a post season begun last fall. Scheduled to play are the doubles teams of Bryan Wilson and Michael Berry and Bill Schneeman and Dustin Sidhu, as well as singles player George Spivikov. Play for both girls and boys begins at 9 a.m.
