Some outdoor fires OK’d

Island County Fire Marshal Mike Hawley has lifted a burn ban that has been in place since July

Beginning Sept. 20, some outdoor buring of natural debris will be allowed in the unincorporated areas of Island County.

The burn piles must be less than 4 feet in diameter. All fires must be built on bare soil away from dry grass or foliage, and may not be within 50 feet of any structure.

Permits are required for outdoor fires larger than 4 feet in diameter, in unincorporated island county. No burning allowed in Oak Harbor urban growth area.

To obtain a permit contact the County Fire Warden. The minimal fee is $20 for residential burns, $50 for commercial.

Permits that were still valid on July 31, when outdoor burning was banned, are reinstated, and open burning may resume Sept. 20 under the conditions set by the county fire warden.

Also allowed under the lifted ban are campfires and fires in lined burning pits.

For information contact Island County Fire Warden during business hours, starting Sept. 26 at 321-5111 Ext. 7343.
