Two home games showed South Whidbey volleyball at the top of its game and near its bottom as the Falcons split a pair of North Cascade Conference contests.

On Tuesday, the Falcons ravaged a hapless Sultan squad in a 3-0 smearing in Erikson Gymnasium, but then came back Thursday to play a match against Granite Falls that made them look almost as helpless as their opponents two nights earlier.

Against the Turks, South Whidbey was devastating. Behind a barrage of 11 aces from junior Katy McGillen and nearly flawless defensive play, the Falcons allowed only five Sultan points over three games to win 15-1, 15-4, 15-0.

But by Thursday, the Falcons seemed to have taken Sultan’s place on the floor. In the first two games of the night, the South Whidbey girls managed just four points as they lost 15-1, 15-3 to open the match. A comeback in the third game brought some life to the Falcon cause as they rallied to a 15-12 win to take the match to 2-1. But against two Tiger servers who were a perfect 20 for 20, Jasmine Quinn and Becca Bowers, the South Whidbey girls could not hold out for another game win. They lost the fourth and final game of the night 15-5.

Standing out for the Falcons was junior Bronwyn Russell, who had 12 assists on the night.

Now 4 and 2 overall, the Falcons play again today in the South Whidbey Invitational. Games run all day at South Whidbey High School.
