Surprising even Falcon Coach Tom Kramer, the undefeated South Whidbey girls tennis team upset powerful Sedro-Woolley 5-2 on Wednesday.

But the coach doesn’t want his young players to take anything for granted.

“We played well at times but the concentration level will have to improve quite a bit if we are going to be successful later in the season,” Kramer said.

Natalie Wheeler had a good afternoon in first singles, controlling the match with speed and grace. New singles player Ana Weeks showed an improved understanding of the game, winning at fourth singles.

Meanwhile, Nicole Zalewski finished strongly in her match.

“Her performance was a very good sign,” the coach said. For her third straight victory, Liz Lutch did her usual come-from-behind finish over Sedro-Woolley’s Chelsea Jann.

Off to an impressive start this season are two freshmen, Shannon Craig and Julia Iversen.

“I am really pleased with their progress,” Kramer said.

In singles play, Wheeler defeated Aneta Bunke 6-2, 6-0, Zalewski beat Harmony McBee 6-4, 6-1, Lutch overcame Jann 3-6, 6-3 and 6-0, and Weeks upset Kelly Tucker 7-6, 6-4.

In doubles play, Iversen and Craig upended Emily Nesheim and Kenzie Rose 6-1, 6-4, while Victoria Comfort and Jen Gemkow were overcome by Jill Lidgard and Hilary Dolstad 2-6, 3-6, Kelsi Lindus and Noelle Metz lost to Becky Larsen and Kathryn McGoffin 6-3, 2-6 and 4-6.

The overall record for the team is now 3-0, and Kramer said the girls have been a bit lucky so far.

“We need to keep improving; the toughest part of the season is still ahead of us,” he said.

Next week’s three matches are all potentially tough. The Falcons will need their “A” game all week as they face Lakewood, Lynden and Burlington (a make-up match). The team next welcomes Sehome to the South Whidbey courts, at 3:30 p.m. Monday,

April 2.

“Hopefully the weather will cooperate,” Kramer added.
