Twenty of 24 wooden wind toys stolen last week from a Freeland home came back this week against the odds.

The handmade toys, which were stolen from Mona and Gary Turner’s fence on March 8, were returned to the couple when they were found dumped alongside a South Whidbey road Saturday.

Mona Turner said a road worker who read about the disappearance of the toys in The South Whidbey Record told an Island County Sheriff’s deputy where they could be found. Slightly worse for wear — a few of them needed to be repaired — the toys went back on the fence Saturday morning.

Two or three of the stolen toys are still missing. Turner said she hopes those come back as well, but noted that she is already surprised that any returned.
