A Clinton teen and her passenger escaped injury Sunday afternoon when the car she was driving rolled over twice before coming to rest on an embankment along Hastings Road near the intersection with Bob Galbreath Road in Clinton.

Mindy Norton, 17, was driving a 1997 Subaru Legend when, according to Island County Sheriff’s Deputy Laura Price, “she apparently overcorrected when she came around the corner when her tires touched the edge of the road. The car came to rest on its wheels.”

Norton was driving from Langley to Clinton.

Price said it appeared that there was very little damage to the car because it was cushioned by the blackberry bushes growing on the embankment.

Norton, who received a Washington interim driver’s license on Oct. 4, was cited for driving with a passenger under the age of 20. Under state law, during the first six months of receiving a driver’s license, teen drivers cannot carry passengers under the age of 20 other than family members, or until the driver reaches the age of 18.

Norton also was cited for negligent driving.

“This is important for teen drivers to be aware of this law,” Price said.

Price said speed was a factor in the accident. She estimated that Norton was traveling between 50 and 60 mph on Hastings Road, which has a speed limit of 35 mph in that area.
