They’re in the playoffs, but not with as much panache as they might have hoped.

Playing their last home game of the season Wednesday night, the Falcon boys soccer team dropped a 3-1 game to Lakewood, losing their chance at a .500 season as they fell to 7-9 on the year.

Assured of the number six spot in the district playoffs going into the game, the Falcons didn’t need the win. But with 10 seniors in the game or on the sidelines with injuries and various illnesses at this final home game, the contest was about going out with a good showing.

Early on, things were good for the Falcons. Though shorthanded with seniors George Spivakov and Chris Layman sick, junior Abe Smith-Groening injured, and sophomore defender Roy Ishii also a bit under the weather, the Falcons got up early on a goal junior Adam Jaffe fed to senior Chris Martin in front of the net.

With senior goalkeeper Finn Keough protecting the net, the score remained 1-0 until well into the first half. But after a long warmup, the Cougars got on better offensive footing and scattered three goals over 50 minutes to win the game.

Playing their last home game for the Falcons were seniors Benno Haydl, Aubrey Lawlor-White, Chris Martin, Jesse Mestemacher, Isaiah Murphy, Keough and Jeff Serrill, who scored the first goal of his varsity career during Monday’s game against Blaine.

A first-round district playoff game scheduled for today against Sultan was rescheduled for Friday due to a conflict with the South Whidbey High School prom.
