“A little rewriting is all it will take to add 40 acres of ballfields and woodland trails to the South Whidbey Community Park.On Dec. 6, the Island County Board of Commissioners agreed in principle to sign an interlocal agreement with the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District, under which the county will pay $167,500 for half of the privately-owned acreage bordering the park. Commissioner Mike Shelton said the commissioners were ready to sign the agreement Monday, but they found that the wording needed to be changed in several places.“It had a couple of little flaws, but it will be signed next week,” Shelton said.On the Parks District side, the board of commissioners took the necessary steps last week to secure the 40-acre property. In the board’s Wednesday meeting, the commissioners signed an interagency agreement with Island County that will give the parks district the ability to use the county’s half of the purchase. The board also gave the go ahead for signing onto a loan package with Whidbey Island Bank. The loan will cover the district’s half of the $335,000 land purchase.Funds from the county will come out of its real estate excise tax revenues.”
