“South Whidbey High School wrestlers won their final regular season home match Thursday by downing North Cascades League rival Granite Falls 47-10.“There were lots of forfeits and some good wrestling,” said Falcon coach Mike Crebbins. Three Granite Falls forfeits resulted in 18 points for the hosts.Winners for South Whidbey included:Sean Rumberger, 130 pounds, a pin at 5 minutes and 14 seconds.Sean Noste, 135, 10-4 decision.Abe Baker, 168, 18-0 technical fall.Brandon Hern, 171, 10-7 decision.Justin Admiral, 189, pin at 1:50.Chris Hezel, 215, pin at 29 seconds.In the heavyweight division, Falcon Trevor Fleming put up a heroic battle before losing to Granite Falls’ big guy, who finished fifth at state last year.Fleming was only two points down in the final round, but ended up on his back when he unsuccessfully tried to throw his opponent. He lost 9-2. “It was entertaining, good wrestling, and a good test of Trevor’s ability,” Crebbins said.In another league meet Jan. 6, South Whidbey lost 48-28 to the Lakewood Cougars. Falcon winners were:Teague Moffett, 119 pounds, pin at 41 seconds.Sean Noste, 130, 6-3 decision.Chris Ford, 152, 9-8 decision in what coach Crebbins called “a key win in a very tough match that’s critical for seeding at district.”Brandon Hern, 171 pounds, a 20-9 “major decision” victory.At the Shoreline Invitational Jan. 8 Crebbins brought the half of his team that wasn’t downed by the flu bug. South Whidbey was the smallest of the eight schools, and of the seven Falcons who wrestled six managed to place and three finished first in their division.Chris Long was 4th at 125 pounds; Andy Wills 4th at 145; Abe Baker 1st at 160; Brandon Hern 2nd at 189, Trevor Fleming 1st at 215, and Chris Hezel 1st at 275. Overall, the Falcons placed sixth.The Falcon varsity wrestlers end their league season this Thursday at Sultan. South Whidbey hosts the North Cascades league preliminaries on Jan. 29.”
