The good news last week was that except for a couple rough innings, pitching was not a problem for the Falcon baseball team.

In a three-game week capped by sophomore Logan Hanna’s 12-strikeout performance against Blaine, South Whidbey had little to fear when it came to putting players on the pitchers mound. It was the infield that got a little scary.

Playing Lynden Christian twice and Blaine once, the Falcons amassed more errors than hits during the three-game stretch, committing a total of 21 fielding miscues. The errors cost the team dearly — they lost all three games and fell to 3-6 in the North Cascades Conference after starting the season 3-1.

“We’re just snake bit right now,” said Falcon head coach Dave Guetlin of the week. “We’ve just got a lot of youth in the infield.”

And after working a lot of ground balls in practice over the past few days, Guetlin said the two sophomores, one junior and one senior manning the infield are ready for and in need of a win to shake off a run of highly curable physical mistakes in the field.

The trouble started when Lynden Christian came to play at South Whidbey High School on April 14. Though South Whidbey got a solid, full-game effort from sophomore hurler Dustin Sidhu, five Falcon errors and just five hits spread over seven innings hurt the team on the scoreboard.

It got worse two days later on the Lyncs’ home field. Seven balls booted by a still-shaky South Whidbey defense and a nine-run Lync assault on senior Falcon pitcher Josh Coleman in the first two innings sealed the game for the home team 14-4. According to Guetlin, the Falcons were not able to put much together at the plate, compling as many hits as runs and none of them for extra bases.

Against Blaine last Friday, the story was the same, except this time the pitching was near perfect. Pitcher Hanna’s strikeout tally plus four allowed walks might have kept the score close, but another seven fielding errors opened the door for the Boarderites to walk through to the tune of 6-0.

The Falcons play next on Thursday against Meridian. They return home Monday to play the Trojans again.
