LANGLEY — Twenty years ago Joe Patrick opened up a small shop in Langley.

Ever since, Joe’s Island Music has become a Langley landmark for the musical masses. This Saturday the store will celebrate another watershed moment: its move to a new location on Anthes Street. And besides its new digs, the store also has a new owner.

“It’s an honor,” said new owner Rachel Mattern. “When we went to the shop and heard that Joe was selling, (husband) Rob and I looked at each other and thought we should do that. Joe’s can’t disappear.”

After all, the couple’s connection with the store dates back to their wedding day.

Rachel and Rob Mattern’s relationship with Joe’s Island Music was cemented seven years ago when they inquired about a local band to play at their wedding reception.

David Licastro, a music instructor at Joe’s Music, plugged his band Da Sharks and the couple gladly took the bassist’s suggestion.

Now, the couple have returned to Joe’s Music and the plan is to make even more beautiful music together.

That means building on the store’s reputation as the South End hub for music lovers of all ages — with a great selection of music, books, instruments and gear — and a source of information for community music events and the local music scene.

With the big move to Anthes, Joe’s Music will see some big changes, too.

Three new practice rooms have been added that gave the new owners the opportunity to add classes.

“We were able to have two teachers, but there wasn’t enough space for strings, cello lessons and not enough soundproofing to teach horns,” Mattern said. “This has been really exciting.”

A new teacher, Avi Rostov, is providing band instrument lessons, and continues to support the store’s band rental program.

Another newcomer, James Hinkley, is offering cello, violin and viola lessons.

With the help of Rostov and Hinkley the shop is better able to serve customers with band and string instrument repairs and advice, Mattern said.

Under Patrick’s tutelage, Rob Mattern is taking the stores popular “maximizing” guitar service to an even higher level, Rachel Mattern said.

“Joe said it best the other day; it brings the guitar in harmony with itself,” Mattern explained.

Though customers may notice a few different things in the new location, other things won’t change.

While Patrick heads off to enjoy what he calls semi-retirement, Jeff Whitaker’s long-term presence at Joe’s Music will continue. David Licastro and Levi Burkle will also continue music instruction.

“It’s been both of our dreams to own a business, and we always loved Langley,” Mattern said.

“But this is our first official business venture,” she added.

The Matterns have been overwhelmed at the assistance of not only Patrick, his wife Gail and the Joe’s Music team, but also the support they’ve received from the community and customers.

“People just jumped in and volunteered. It’s been really wonderful,” Mattern said.

The store remains open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Beginning in October it will also be open on Sundays.

Joe’s Music will celebrate its grand opening on Sept. 15, with live music throughout the day. Specials will continue into October.
