Wrestlers take full lineup to Cascades finals

Jim Larsen / staff photos It will be one of the most complete and most talented line-ups South Whidbey has ever put on the mat during the post season. On Saturday, at least 13 Falcons will wrestle at Meridian High School for conference titles and for the chance to move on to the bi-district championships on Feb. 12. Five of that number got the equivalent of a bye weekend last Saturday, when scores of North Cascades League wrestlers converged on South Whidbey High School to grip and grunt it out for the final four seeds in each weight class. Falcons Chris Long, Luke Smith, Chris Ford, Brandon Hern, and Trevor Fleming got to stay out of the fracas, because their regular season records qualified them for the conference finals automatically. For everyone else wearing Falcon blue, Saturday was tough. Junior Bruce Hymas had the best day for the Falcons, beating all comers in the 119-pound division to lock up a number-five seed for next weekend. To get there, he had to out-wrestle teammate Teague Moffett in a final-round match. The teammate-versus-teammate struggle sent Hymas out on top, while Moffett had to settle for the number-six seed. At 130 pounds, Sean Rumberger did well enough to grab the unenviable seventh seed for next weekend. Unenviable because he will have to wrestle teammate Luke Smith in the first round Saturday. That is just the way it goes in post-season wrestling, Falcon coach Mike Crebbin said. Everybody wrestles everybody. It’s getting to be that time of year, Crebbin said. Kelly Foote made the final-round cut at 135, as did 140-pounders Jeremy Bartlett and Andy Wills. At 160, Abe Baker had to strike another temporary blow against team spirit when he wrestled fellow Falcon Chris Martin in a 9-5 win. As a result, Martin will be an alternate in next weeks meet. Even so, Crebbin said both wrestlers are fortunate to be in the hunt for the championship — or at least a trip to state — at this point. It’s probably one of the toughest weight classes in this league, he said. Duane Hunt qualified as an alternate in the 189-pound division, while Chris Hezel made sixth seed in the 215-pound division. The conference finals start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Meridian High School. Where are they seeded?Depending on how well they rank from their regular season records and how they did in the North Cascades Conference preliminaries Saturday, South Whidbey’s wrestlers have drawn varying fortunes for next weekend’s conference finals. No matter where they wind up, the road to district promises to be a challenge — but it will be more so for the Falcons who grabbed the last spot or two in the finals. Here are where they rank: 119 – Bruce Hymas 5, Teague Moffett 6125 – Chris Long 4130 – Luke Smith 4, Sean Rumberger 7135 – Kelly Foote 6140 – Jeremy Bartlett 7, Andy Wills 8152 – Chris Ford 2160 – Abe Baker 8, Chris Martin 9*171 – Brandon Hern 3189 – Duane Hunt 9*215 – Trevor Fleming 2, Chris Hezel 6 * denotes alternates “
