Driving lesson ends in Freeland accident

A driving lesson took a turn for the worse Friday evening when a 15-year-old Freeland girl was involved in a minor-injury collision.

According to the Island County Sheriff’s Office, Marissa Wilhelm was driving a 1989 Toyota pickup west on Bush Point Road and began a right turn onto Mutiny Bay Road. As she turned she struck a 1992 Ford F250 pickup driven by Megan Malecki, 19, Freeland, that was stopped at a stop sign on Mutiny Bay Road.

Wilhelm, who has a learner’s permit, was getting a lesson from her father, Kurt Wilhelm, 44.

Wilhelm and his daughter were treated at the scene. Malecki was not injured.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Norrie, neither the driver nor her father were wearing seatbelts.

“The young driver received a cut on her lip, and her father had an abrasion on his forehead and window glass in his hair,” he said.

Norrie said he was told this was only the second time the girl had used a vehicle with a clutch.

“Evidently there was too much going on. She put the clutch in but failed to brake as she went around the corner,” Norrie said.

He said the driver was cited for failure to stay right of the center line and her passenger was cited for not wearing a seatbelt and for not encouraging his daughter to wear one.

“When parents are riding with their teens they have a responsibility to see that they are conforming to traffic laws,” Norrie said.

The Ford truck had oversized tires and was raised, but Norris said it is a legal height. The Toyota ran into the rear of the other truck and bounced off a tire.

Estimated damage to Malecki’s truck was $2,000, and the Toyota was estimated to be a total loss..
