The artistic talents of students from all over Whidbey Island will be recognized Sunday at the fifth annual all-island high school art show, “Arts and Appetizers,” sponsored by the American Association of University Women.
The event, a gala affair that will showcase a gallery of juried works, many for sale, will be held at The Greenbank Farm from 1 to 4 p.m.
This is only the second year in which the show has been juried, according to Jan Heideger of the AAUW. Jurors include island artists Mary Ann Mansfield, owner of Bayview Art Gallery; photographer Sharon Schumaker; and Mark Sesslor, sculptor.
Ribbons will awarded in four categories: wall art, sculpture, photography and computer graphics. The top three artists in each category will receive cash prizes. Some of the students will offer their work for sale at the show.
There will also be a “People’s Choice” award, selected by a vote of ticket holders attending the event.
In addition to the gallery of art work, the festive event will feature gourmet appetizers and desserts provided by AAUW members with a Cinco de Mayo theme. Food, wine and punch, are included in the ticket price.
Classical guitarist Hendrik Sikkenga and South Whidbey violinist Linda Good will provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon.
All proceeds from “Arts and Appetizers,” which is the Whidbey Island AAUW Branch’s principal fund-raising project, will be used to award grants to college-bound senior women from South Whidbey/Bayview, Coupeville and Oak Harbor high schools. In the four years the event has been held, there were three scholarships given each year, one at each Whidbey Island high school. here will be three scholarships awarded again this year.
The branch also will make a contribution to each participating high school’s art department.
