On Saturday, some of the best track athletes in the state will be running, jumping and throwing at Waterman Field.

In town for the 22nd annual Carl Westling Invitational Track Meet, star athletes from Bainbridge Island, Clover Park, Nathan Hale, Ballard, Port Angeles, Marysville Pilchuck, John F. Kennedy, Sedro-Woolley, Granite Falls, Northwest School, Anacortes, Oak Harbor, Chimacum and South Whidbey will all be at the meet at what has become in recent years the top pre-state track shootout in Western Washington.

While the boys and girls teams will, as in past years, be gunning for the team championships, they will have a lot of tough competition to go through. Among the top athletes participating are: Matt Wauters of Bainbridge who leads the state in all classifications with a 55-foot, 9.5-inch shot put and the state second-best 180-foot discus throw; the state leading Clover Park 4×100 relay team; Tim Freeman, Bainbridge’s 1:52.83, state leading 800-meter runner; as well as some of the fastest girl sprinters from around the state.

From South Whidbey, the 2A state leading 4×200 team will be on the track, as will junior Katy McGillen, the 2A state leader in the high jump with a top mark of 5-6. Falcon Andy Wills, the 2A state leader in 100, 200 and 400 will also run.

The meet starts at 11:15 a.m. with field events. The distance relay starts at 11:30 a.m.
