On a windy day that carried what should be the last of winter’s cold over the fairways and greens of the Holmes Harbor Golf Course, the Falcon boys made themselves look like winners again Tuesday.

With Lakewood and Nooksack Valley in town, the South Whidbey golfers shot in the mid 50s and low 60s for 13 holes to beat the Cougars by 25 shots and the Pioneers by 37.

Two Falcons, Bryan Wilson and Bryce Hansen, were mostly in control of the elements. The pair shot 55s to finish as co-medalists ahead of Lakewood’s Mike Simpson, who at 56 strokes was the closest competition on the course. Behind the leaders, Kevin Carter and Jeff Strong hit 60s. Falcon Coach Mick Heggenes said Stong experienced both the best and worst of his game, swinging for par on most of the middle holes, but getting snarled in double and triple bogeys on the first two and last two holes on the day.

Sophomore Reed Dettrich finished out South Whidbey’s scoring with a 61.

Heggenes said the day was a good one, considering the conditions.

“Wind is a tough element to play in golf,” he said.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Falcons all but finish regular-season play in consecutive home meets at Useless Bay Golf Course. Heggenes said the meets will bring most of his boys’ North Cascades Conference competition to town for a preview of the players they will see at the May 2 NCC championship.
