Two more victories, one difficult, one not-so-difficult, gave the Falcon fastpitch team lucky number 7 last week as they moved to 7-0 in North Cascades play and 11-0 overall.
The hard part came against Sedro-Woolley last Friday. Playing on the road, the Falcons just saved their perfect record by beating the Sedro girls for the second time this year by just one run.
South Whidbey had to work for that one run, but they got it out of the way early. After a leadoff walk by junior Bronwyn Russell and a Christie Robinson walk, the team made progress when the two baserunners moved ahead on a Carolann Lubach groundout to the Sedro-Woolley shortstop.
After that, it was all Russell. The durable second base player needed only a Mary Murphy ground out to the shortstop to send her flying for home. Sliding head first, Russell tagged the edge of home plate while cruising under the tag, putting up the winning run.
Three Falcons singles scattered in the second, fifth and seventh innings came for nothing, but that did not matter as Robinson allowed only two hits in a full game on the mound.
On Monday, a road game against Nooksack Valley should have been a tighter contest, based on the numbers.
Taking on the undefeated Pioneers, the Falcons gave Nooksack a fastpitch clinic as they buried them under a 14-2 avalanche.
Russell got things going in this game as well, taking advantage of the return to North Cascades Conference pitching to tag a leadoff double in the first inning. She would go on to be 5-for-5 on the day with two doubles, four runs and one RBI.
That performance, plus a Mary Murphy grand slam in the seventh and another home run, and Carolann Lubach’s three scores and one RBI was more than the Pioneers could handle. Lubach narrowly missed out on her own home run when the umpire called a left field shot over the fence foul, according to the South Whidbey coaching staff.
Jenny Murphy had a double in the game, and senior Julie Robinson was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Pitcher Christie Robinson, making her second appearance in four days, compiled 11 strikeouts while giving up only two hits and one base on balls.
The Falcons come home Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. game against Sultan.
