Memorial Day weekend means two things on Whidbey Island.

Most important, it is a time to take a moment to honor the men and women who have served in the military and died for their country. It is also when ferry passengers should expect delays.

Fortunately, those delays should not affect two Memorial Day ceremonies are scheduled for Monday.

Two separate services at 11 a.m. will be held at Clinton Cemetery and at the Bayview Cemetery. The Clinton observance is put on by the Daughters of the American Revolution and Boy Scout Troop 57, while the Bayview is sponsored by the South Whidbey Veterans of Foreign Wars and South Whidbey Legion Post 141.

Memorial Day traditionally brings summer crowds, but the added factor of abbriviated holiday service schedule may mean more people traveling by ferry — and fewer sailings.

Generally, ferry travelers can expect waits all day Monday. The Mukilteo/ Clinton route will operate on its holiday schedule. On the west side of the island, low tides have caused changes to the Port Townsend/Keystone route this weekend. For more information, call 888-808-7977.

There are several Memorial Day closures on the island.

County, state, federal and Langley city offices will be closed Monday, as will vehicle licensing agencies. South Whidbey schools, financial institutions and post offices that are not open on weekends will be closed Monday. Island Transit buses will not run Monday.

Among those working on Monday will be the crews of Island Disposal, who will pick up trash on their regular Monday schedule.
