“Photographer and filmmaker Sharon Shoemaker of Clinton will present a preview showing of her new short film, “Drinking Water from a Black Toilet,” this Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Bayview Gallery (behind Velocity Bikes). Screening is at 7 p.m.; admission is free. The film looks at the human capacity for hatred and its horrific consequences, utilizing pieces of old footage from Nazi Germany plus “riveting” sound and special effects. “Striking and unusual techniques are employed effectively in Shoemaker’s film to create a message which cannot be forgotten,” said writer Victory Schouten. The experimental film is an all-island production: it was produced and directed by Shoemaker, edited by Jane Winslow and narrated by Sonja Thoma. Original music and some sound effects were composed and performed by Ed Gottstein. Other Whidbey residents contributing to the 20-minute film include Eric Rosenthal, special effects; Mark Douglas, poetry; and Pauline Rosenberg with a special reading. “Although the topic is a difficult one, it is one I have felt compelled to address,” Shoemaker said. “The making of this film was an incredible experience for everyone involved. There is so much talent here on Whidbey Island, all production as possible here. Having access to digital video and computers has opened up new dimensions to me as a visual artist.” Shoemaker said she hopes people will come and see the film and that it will generate thought and conversation. “This film is about not forgetting that which is hard to know and about not turning a blind eye to what is still happening today.” “
