Island Transit and the Washington State Transit Insurance Pool recently recognized a bus operator for coming to the aid of a rider with a medical emergency.
Andre Smith, an Island Transit bus operator, was one of nine recipients of the statewide “Above &Beyond Award.”
The award recognizes a public transportation employee who goes “above and beyond” the requirements of the job.
While driving a bus last year, Smith jumped into action after realizing that a rider was experiencing acute medical problems.
Smith immediately called for help. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive at the scene, he stayed with the rider “to ensure comfort, safety, and medical attention as warranted,” Island Transit said in a news release.
“Operator Smith’s intuitive response provided exceptional human service and may have saved a life that day,” an Island Transit press release said.
Al Hatten, director of the Washington State Transit Insurance Pool Executive Director, presented Smith with the award during the Island Transit board meeting Monday.
“Island Transit was proud to nominate him for the recognition and excited to hear he was one of the first selections for this new program that, in this case, recognizes our key talent, the operators that deliver Island Transit service every day,” Island Transit Director Mike Nortier said.
