Sophia Nielsen’s win in the long jump highlighted the efforts of the South Whidbey track team in the first day of the sub-district meet Thursday, May 10, at Sultan.

The finals in five girls and three boys events were held Thursday; the finals for the others will take place beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The top six finishers in each event and all the relays qualify for next week’s district meet May 17 and 19 at King’s. Others can move on if they earn one of the two all-large berths depending upon the outcome of the two sub-district meets or earn district qualifying marks.

In team scoring, the South Whidbey girls were in fourth place after Thursday’s events with 34 points; King’s led with 45.5. The Falcon boys were in fifth with 11 points; Meridian was on top with 36.5.

Nielsen won the long jump with a leap of 16-03.5, Mattason Straub was third (15-5.25), Camille Young 11th (13-03.5) and Laura Moran 16th (11-07).

Emily Vanberg placed second in the javelin (107-09) and Maddy Drye was ninth (77-09).

Kaia Swegler Richmond (5:22.45) and Elizabeth Donnelly (5:30.19) finished 3-5 in the 1,600.

Donnelly tied Mallory Drye for 10th in the high jump (4-02); Grace Complete was 12th (4).

Rachel Hunter took 15th in the shot put (25.07).

In the boys triple jump, Isaiah Gonzales nabbed fourth (40-06).

Callahan Yale (4:37.9), Michael Cepowski (4:40.76) and Cooper Ullmann (5:00.09) went 5-9-16 in the 1,600.

Owen Boram placed seventh in the javelin (136-10), while Max Dodd was 13th (111-07) and Brady Hezel 15th (107-07).
