A solid first-day showing at the district track meet Thursday, May 17, at King’s resulted in four South Whidbey High School athletes qualifying for the state meet.

Finals in eight events were held Thursday. The finals in the others begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The top four in each event qualify for the state meet May 24-26 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

Sophia Nielsen set a new school record while winning the long jump in 17-09.5.

Emily Vanberg also qualified for state by placing second in the javelin (114-06).

Two Falcon boys earned state berths. Romey Rohde took second in the pole vault (12), and Issiah Gonzales finished fourth in the triple jump (41-04.5).

Others scoring points for South Whidbey by placing in the top eight were Casey Justus (seventh, discus, 108-02), Owen Boram (fifth, javelin, 152-02), Sam Martin (sixth, pole vault, 10-06) and Mattason Straub (seventh, long jump, 15-04).

Kaia Swegler Richmond (ninth, 1,600, 5:22.82), Camille Young (14th, long jump, 13-06), Michael Cepowski (12th, 1,600, 4:49.19), Dylan Harris (ninth, discus, 106-07) and Tyler King (12th, pole vault, 8-06) also competed for the Falcons Thursday.
