Letter: Support Protect Washington Act to help salvage our planet

Editor,

We have known for decades that carbon pollution would change our planet.

In 1974, the CIA issued a classified report on the carbon-dioxide problem. It concluded that climate change had begun around 1960 and that “the future economic and political impacts would be almost beyond comprehension.”

We now are living those effects. In the 1980s Candidate G.H.W. Bush ran on being a climate leader saying, “Those who think we are powerless to do anything about the greenhouse gas effect forget about the Whitehouse effect.”

Of course, when he got in office he what? Yup, did nothing. Now we have science denying politicians, some right here in Island County, who repeat the dirty fuel industry’s lies and are paid handsomely for it.

The good news is that there are those who recognize the threat and are doing something about it.

On Sunday, Aug. 26, at the South Whidbey Commons from 12:30- 3 p.m. we will be discussing then implementing getting Initiative-1631, The Protect Washington Act enacted.

The Washington State Budget and Policy Center concludes that, “I-1631 is a smart, inclusive proposal to invest in clean energy, air and water in Washington state.”

We’ll have a briefing/update, then a training in various methods of reaching out to friends and community, including going door to door. We’ll do that and then return to the Commons for debriefing and snacks.

The Commons is located at 124 2nd St., Langley, Join us and be a climate hero.

Go to Yes! on 1631 to learn more.
