The Bush School defeated the visiting South Whidbey High School tennis team 4-1 Monday, Sept. 10.

“A bit rough,” coach Karyle Kramer said. “Bush is more experienced, but we put up a good fight on most matches.”

Freshmen Ranger Buck and Max Rodriguez picked up the Falcons’ point with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win in third doubles.

Levi Buck (6-4, 6-2) and Soren Bratrude (6-0, 6-4) lost in singles, while Brent de Wolf/Joey Lane (6-2, 6-3) and Brent Batchelor/Ian Maddox (6-2, 3-6, 11-9) fell in doubles.

“Levi played against one of the league’s top singles players (and) had his opportunities to break, but few crucial points here and there left him with a loss,” Kramer said.

“Soren listened well in between sets and focused on keeping the ball in play instead of beating himself,” she added. “(He played) much better in the second set. Overall I’m happy with his progress; (I’m) asking him to do a lot for only a second-year player.”

The match was played indoors at the Amy Yee Center in Seattle, which will host the district tournament.

Kramer said it was a “good experience” in preparation for district.

South Whidbey returns to the Yee Center to face Seattle Academy at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12.
