Cedar Park Christian-Bothell scored on a free kick in overtime to defeat the visiting South Whidbey High School soccer team Tuesday, Sept. 11.
The match was the league opener for both schools and the first loss for the Falcons in three matches this season.
Both Eagle (1-0, 3-1) scores came on set plays. The game-winner came on a free kick just outside the penalty area; the first from a corner kick.
South Whidbey’s score came with five minutes remaining on a direct penalty kick by Ashley Ricketts as a result of a CPC handball in the penalty area.
Falcon coach Terry Swanson was pleased with his defense and the improved play of his less-experienced athletes.
“(The) new players have been working hard to make-up for injuries to our starting striker Alison Papritz (foot sprain) and fullback/midfielder Karyna Hezel (ankle sprain),” Swanson said. “They are playing extended minutes in competitive games and have earned the opportunity to play extended minutes throughout the season.”
Swanson noted that Ashton Helseth, Lila McCleary, Kelly Murnane and Mallory Drye had “especially strong games” against Cedar Park Christian, and that “all our players on the field played with heart and passion.”
Offense and finishing scoring opportunities have been the focus of recent practice, according to Swanson.
“Scoring goals against good teams is difficult and requires scoring threats from outside the 18,” he added.
South Whidbey (0-1, 2-1) plays a non-league match at Oak Harbor (0-2-1) at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.
