The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced Friday morning that the regional wrestling tournaments scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, have been canceled because of weather conditions.
“In the best interest of safety and equal opportunity for our participants, we believe it is the right decision at this time,” WIAA Assistant Executive Director Brian Smith said in an email.
Four wrestlers from each weight class at each of the four regional tournaments would have qualified for the state meet.
Because of the cancellation of the regional tournaments, the state will expand each class from 16 to 32 participants, Smith said.
“More details will be posted once the Mat Classic managers work through those details,” he said.
South Whidbey’s Clay O’Brien, Drew Aposhyan, Dylan Davis, Caleb McArthur and Eden Batiste all qualified for regional competition. They will now go directly to the state meet, Mat Classic XXXI, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15 and 16, at the Tacoma Dome.
