After the South Whidbey High School softball failed to take advantage of an excellent scoring opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning, Coupeville made the Falcons pay by scoring eight runs in the seventh for an 18-5 win Tuesday, May 7, in Langley.

The contest was Coupeville’s last in the regular season, and the Wolves (9-3, 12-7) clinched at least a tie for first place in the North Sound Conference. Granite Falls (8-3, 11-7) and Cedar Park Christian (8-3, 13-4) each have one more game and can earn a piece of the title with a win.

Cedar Park Christian hosts South Whidbey (2-9, 5-12) at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the regular-season finale for both schools.

Granite Falls hosts Sultan (1-10, 1-13) Thursday.

South Whidbey is locked into fourth place in the North Sound Conference standings and will play the top seed from the Northwest Conference in the district tournament opener at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in Sedro-Woolley.

Coupeville 18, South Whidbey 5

The Falcons trailed 10-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and were primed to get back into the game. They loaded the bases with no outs but failed to score as Coupeville turned a double play to get out of the mess. The Wolves then exploded for eight runs in the seventh to cement the win.

Coupeville stopped two other potential South Whidbey rallies with double plays.

Chanel Sterba finished the day with two hits for the Falcons. Ari Marshall and Melody Wilkie each had doubles, and Kayla Knauer, Natalie Wilmoth, Taylor Fifield, Makenna Morley and Julia Maher all singled.
