Two people were airlifted and another seriously injured in a head-on collision on State Highway 525 Saturday night.
Around 6:40 p.m., a Jeep Wrangler driven by Freeland resident Jennifer Bucholz was traveling south on the highway, when Hyundai Santa Fe driver Susan Hughes, of Edmonds, failed to yield while turning north onto the highway from Smugglers Cove Road and the vehicles collided, according to a Washington State Patrol incident report.
Both cars were totaled, and first responders had to remove the door to extricate the driver and passenger from the Hyundai, said Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue Chief Ed Hartin. The Hyundai’s passenger Gary Hughes and Bucholz were seriously injured and air lifted to Harborview Medical Center.
Susan Hughes was transported to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center and later transported to Harborview as well, Hartin said.
Personnel from Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue, Washington State Patrol, WhidbeyHealth and Island County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved. Charges are under investigation, according to State Patrol.
