Falcon boys win NSC meet / Cross country

Continuing its strong season, the South Whidbey High School boys cross country team won the latest North Sound Conference meet Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Langley.

The Falcons were edged by King’s for the top spot in the girls race.

South Whidbey’s Michael Harwell finished first in the 5,000-meter boys race in 17:18.65 to help the Falcons score 32 points. Cedar Park Christian was second (45), followed by Granite Falls (86), King’s (104) and Coupeville (104).

The Falcons had three other top-10 finishes in the boys event: Cooper Ullmann, sixth, 18:45.72; Thomas Simms, seventh, 18:46.04; and Aidan Donnelly, ninth, 19:06.26.

Kaia Swegler Richmond topped the Falcons in the girls race, taking fourth in 22:33.4. Defending state champion Naomi Smith of King’s won in 18:55.74 as the Knights scored 34 team points. South Whidbey had 41 and Cedar Park Christian 50.

Grace Huffman was fifth (22:44.03) and Jasmin Graner eighth (23:36.93) for the Falcon girls.

South Whidbey runs in the Hole in the Wall Invitational at 9:40 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
