The South Whidbey boys finished first and the girls second in the Cascade Conference middle school cross country championships Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Langley.

The Cougars edged King’s and Lakewood 62-67-69 in a battle for the boys crown. Northshore Christian tallied 88, Granite Falls 90 and Coupeville 121.

King’s led the girls field with 36 points, followed by South Whidbey (51), Lakewood (64), Northshore Christian Academy (88) and Coupeville (111).

Individually, Lucas Walhoff paced the South Whidbey boys by taking fifth out of 86 on the 1.7-mile course in 9:59.77. Granite Falls’ Tony Belgiorno won in 9:34.58.

South Whidbey’s Audrey Gmerek took third out of 48 in the girls race in 10:52.77. Addison Smith of King’s nabbed first in 10:36.73.

Also scoring points for the South Whidbey boys were Ian O’Brien (ninth, 10:10.15), Carter Castle (10th, 10:10.42), Emmett Racicot (18th, 10:39.64) and Chris Lindstrom (22nd, 10:47.57).

Rounding out the top five for the Cougar girls were Abigail Martin (10th, 12:01.8), Sofia Geurkink (11th, 12:20.82), Sierra Muller (13th, 12:29.26) and Priscilla Gori-Lopez (14th, 12:31.67).
