Ava Stamatiou and her goat Freya were the stars of the Homesteaders 4-H Club float at the Holly Jolly Parade on Saturday in Langley. Their float was one of many entries in the procession, from Habitat for Humanity to Whidbey Telecom to the South Whidbey Girl Scouts Troop. Classic cars and canines were also a popular entry. Around 1 p.m. on Dec. 7, newcomers and locals alike strained their ears to hear the sounds of the Washington Scottish Pipe Band, the official herald of the parade’s beginning. The annual event saw a decent turnout of attendees, and despite the gloomy weather, the rain held off for the entire parade. There was no shortage of sweet treats being given out. Mayor Tim Callison, dressed festively as usual, handed out candy on First Street and Santa, bringing up the rear, waved from the top of a South Whidbey fire truck and flashed an occasional thumbs-up to passersby.
