The South Whidbey High School boys basketball team won its fourth straight game, trimming visiting University Prep 66-50 Wednesday, Dec. 11.
After beating its first three foes by an average of nearly 50 points, the 16-point margin of victory over UPrep was the smallest for the Falcons this season. A poor night at the foul line allowed the Puma to stick around; South Whidbey hit only 14 of 30 free throws.
A strong defensive effort in the second half, according to coach Greg Turcott, overcame the sloppy free throw shooting.
Getting 6 points from Levi Buck, South Whidbey took an 11-5 lead in the first quarter.
The Pumas’ Nicholas Aaron hit a trio of three-balls and scored 11 points in the second quarter, but Nick Young matched the 11 points and the Falcons went into halftime up 33-24.
Young and Sterling Patton each scored 5 points in the third quarter when South Whidbey doubled its lead to 52-34.
Carson Wrightson paced the Falcons in the fourth quarter with 5 points.
Young led all scorers with 21 points. Buck tallied 12, Patton 11, Wrightson 9, Dexter Jokinen 5 and Jacob Ng, Brady Hezel, Luke Rookstool and Kole Nelson 2 each.
Aaron finished with 17 for UPrep (1-2).
South Whidbey (4-0) heads north to face Oak Harbor (1-3) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.
