A rough second quarter proved to be the difference in South Whidbey’s 34-26 loss to Friday Harbor in girls basketball Saturday, Dec. 28, in Langley.
The Falcons (0-1, 2-6) play another non-league game when 4A Mariner (3-4) visits at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30.
South Whidbey started well in the loss to Friday Harbor, scooting to a 7-3 lead with the help of 4 points by Isabell Wood. But the Wolverines outscored the Falcons 10-1 in the second period and South Whidbey never recovered.
Friday Harbor led 13-8 at halftime and 19-14 after three quarters.
Wood added 7 points in the fourth quarter and Madi Knauer knocked down a three-pointer, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Wolverines, who scored 15 points in the period.
South Whidbey coach Jeff Hanson called it a “very frustrating game,” but noted that freshman Wood “is getting better each game.”
Wood led all scorers with 14 points. Kayla Knauer and Arianna Briggs each finished with 4, Madi Knauer had 3 and Ella Wood 1. The Falcons played without top scorer Emma Hodson.
