The mayor for the Village by the Sea signed a proclamation of emergency Monday, in compliance with county, state and federal declarations.

Declaring an emergency in the city allows Mayor Tim Callison to extend his mayoral powers during a time of crisis. This provides the flexibility to purchase emergency supplies.

“There has been a good amount of effort done to prepare for natural disasters,” Callisons said. “As a result, people do have supplies at home.”

He added, “If they do get quarantined, they’re able to sustain that quarantine and do it comfortably.”

Merchants are also eligible for emergency business loans.

In keeping with recommendations from the state, Langley officials have decided to restrict time people spend in city hall to help minimize exposure to COVID-19.

City hall is currently closed to the public, and staff can be seen by appointment only. Phones are still being answered Monday through Thursday, 9-5.

Utility payments such as PSE are not being processed right now. Passport screenings and yard waste pick-up have both been suspended.
