Two homegrown South Whidbey organizations dedicated to helping the community will be hosting a garage sale this weekend, with all funds supporting their future good deeds.

The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 1409 Coachman Court in Freeland. WI DRIVE founder Heather Mayhugh, who transports people with disabilities, is organizing the sale with “Island Angel” Cindy Buchanan, who has led island-wide efforts through social media to bring food to families in need.

Buchanan said very few items will be priced for sale, and most will be offered on a “pay-what-you-can” basis of donations. Donations of both money and food are welcome, as long as the latter is still in its packaging.

Baby items, dishes, appliances, furniture, microwaves, linens, pet supplies and rugs will all be available at the sale. People have donated the items to Buchanan especially for the sale.

Whatever is left over after the sale will be donated to victims of the West Coast wildfires, Buchanan said.

Since the start of the pandemic, Buchanan and her flock of Facebook helpers, whom she refers to as the Island Angels, have been helping to secure food for Whidbey families and individuals. They have helped a little over 600 people so far, and the aid extends beyond basic nourishment. She has also helped provide pet food and car repairs.

Buchanan is partnering with WI DRIVE for this weekend’s South End garage sale.

Buchanan has also partnered with other small Whidbey organizations, from Oak Harbor’s “I Support the Girls” chapter to the Whidbey Homeless Coalition to Critters & Co Pet Center in Clinton.

“It’s a big circle, and it’s all community,” Buchanan said.
